Veneers Types

Types of Dental Veneers

Composite-Ceramic-Cadcam-Lumineers

Dental veneers are used to improve the aesthetic look of teeth. While the defects like discolored teeth, broken teeth, irregularly spaced or malformed teeth can make the individual conscious of them in social interactions, the use of veneers can greatly increase the confidence by presenting a confident smile by covering up these deformations caused by diseases or natural causes.

Veneers are made out of special materials that can be fixed onto the surface of teeth permanently. These are made with special ceramic composite materials or porcelain that can last for many years. The color is selected to match the facial features and the profile of existing teeth.

Lumineers are special veneers with enhanced properties for getting superior results. These are made from a special material called Cerinate which is a patented material. The Lumineer shells are ultra-thin, having thickness of just 0.2 mm and are highly translucent. They replace the look of natural enamel more closely and offer good reflective properties to make the teeth shine. The procedure of fixing the Lumineers is also different from the one used for veneers. Because of the extra thickness of the veneers, though it is quite thin- requires removing grinding down of the surface of tooth at least about 0.5 mm. In contrast, the Lumineers are so thin that practically no grinding is necessitated for fixing them. Besides, the superior properties of Lumineers make them highly resistant to decay and wear out for many years.

Lumineers and their adoption has evolved to a great degree, by use of high technology-  from the material technology in choice of best material to the computer technologies in designing highly customized Lumineers to give the best fit and most effective result in getting highly satisfying results for users. CAD CAM technologies are deployed to custom build the Lumineers to suit the individual tooth. With the imaging techniques the exact shape of the tooth is taken. This information is fed to a special program that can develop the dimensional design of the Lumineer as well control the operations to automatically form the final shape of the Lumineer.

The use of CAD CAM technology for designing the ceramic based composite materials has made the job of getting Lumineers a single sitting operation! For fixing the conventional veneers, the dentist had to take the shape of the teeth after grinding the surface and also the X-ray of the tooth and send the molds the images to the laboratory for manufacture. It could take anywhere between 10 to 15 days to get the veneers and had to undergo another sitting for the fixing them. But with CAD CAM Lumineers technology, the process of making the Lumineers is integrated with the imaging. In the next sitting the Lumineer can be fixed, which may be finished in just an hour.

Thus the Lumineers are dental veneers using special material and advance technology that offer a great way to get attractive personality by covering ugly and deformed set of teeth.

Porcelain dental veneers offer attractive alternative to time-consuming orthodontics procedures to reshape the teeth and making them uniform and straight and look whiter as well. Porcelain veneers are shell shaped thin covers that are fixed permanently onto your teeth. It takes just two sittings to get perfectly fitting veneers that enhance your facial features by covering the discolored or malformed teeth.

There are different processes for making the porcelain veneers. Pressed veneers are created from the wax design, where a porcelain ingot is heated and forced into void formed by the wax sample. Refractory model veneers are made from a traditional veneering technique. The layering technique gives good aesthetic properties of shade and translucence. Platinum foil veneer has several advantages and limitations and is not employed commonly now. CAD CAM porcelain veneers are made with help of computer based program for both the design and fabrication of veneers.

The process of fabricating custom built porcelain veneers has been made simple, precise and fast by the introduction of CAM CAD technology. The veneers are manufactured to the required shape with the help of a computer program both in design and fabrication. The program uses a veneer template made in 3D and cuts the veneer in the required shape precisely. It is possible to stain and have layered porcelain build to get the best shape.

Compared to traditional techniques of dental restoration using porcelain veneers, employing CAD CAM techniques can simplify many steps involved. Instead of traditional procedure of taking impressions, it is possible to get the image with the help of a hand held device that records the images digitally. Basically there two techniques that can be employed for CAD CAM restoration; a single visit chair side technique or chair side visit along with laboratory procedure with CAD CAM.

Clinic with dental laboratory equipped with CAD CAM facility has the following advantages.

  • Restorative procedure requires a single visit.
  • No need to make impressions.
  • No need of temporary restoration.
  • No separate laboratory costs.
  • No need of mechanical modeling or die pouring.
  • Offers less risk potential of tooth sensitization.
  • Very little margin of error.

But it is observed that the finished restorations done under this procedure have inferior esthetics as compared to laboratory fabricated porcelain veneers.

Integrated chair side and laboratory CAD CAM technique requires two sittings. Here the dentist can make the traditional impression to take the scan or directly scan the structure of teeth and send the image to the laboratory for fabrication. If the latter method is chosen, the patient does not require undergoing the process of taking impression and also a source of possible errors is eliminated. There are different techniques for transmission for sending the images to the laboratory like CEREC Connect and iTero scans which accept the series of digital images and use them for fabricating the veneers.  One of the advantages of this technique is that the dentist is able to optimize the design for best aesthetic effects by focusing on artistic ceramics. Of course, it requires two visits for the sitting but the time for each sitting is reduced.

CAD CAM porcelain veneers offer best solutions for dental restoration and help to get the veneers with minimum errors and time required for the whole procedure.
